Mirus International attended the IEEE IAS PCIC 2022 Conference in September in Denver, Colorado and presented an Abstract for a potential white paper. The paper has been accepted for inclusion in the 2023 conference, and Mirus will now be co-authoring this paper with an industry client/colleague. The paper highlights some of the new items in the IEEE Std 519-2022 and helps to clarify the differences between Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and Total Demand Distortion (TDD), two concepts that are closely related but often confused. A presentation of the paper will be given at the IEEE IAS PCIC 2023 Conference in New Orleans, and the white paper will be distributed in a 2023 eNewsletter.
Abstract:
Among those trying to apply the harmonic limits of IEEE Std 519-2022, there can be some confusion on the difference between Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and Total Demand Distortion (TDD), and when each value is used. This paper is written to provide clarity and direction on how to apply the Standard’s current distortion limits as they were intended, but also in a way that is practical for real world projects. It will outline how to apply the limits for both an existing site and during the design stage of a new installation/project. It proposes a way to determine the proper demand factor without the need to wait until after the system has been installed and running for many months, and then calculating the appropriate demand distortion to correspond to the IEEE519 demand distortion requirements. The IEEE Std 519-2022 update has clarified requirements for projects without a full year of demand load to use, and this paper will explain and incorporate this new information.
The paper reviews the establishment of major criteria and conversion factors within the IEEE-519-2022 Std, including:
- Peak demand evaluation criteria for both existing and new installations, with a discussion of methodology and data sources for each.
- Properly applying this factor into the ITHD to ITDD calculations and IEEE-519-2014 limit evaluations discussions.
- An Effective and Pragmatic structure for the evaluation of the true harmonic circuit condition.
Examples of both new and existing evaluations will be included within the paper and presentation, allowing for a practical understanding of the procedure and methodology.
